The land of Gaya

Gaya is the land where King Dashrath's own soul called out for Pind Daan — and Mata Sita completed it with the sand of this very earth. When even Maryada Purushottam could not escape this debt, how can we?

Here flows the Falgu — antah-salila, the river that runs within. Only sand above, but ceaseless water beneath. So too are those we have lost — death did not erase them; they live within us.

The purpose of the pind

The pind of rice, barley and sesame is no ordinary offering — it is the form of the body that is no more. In offering it, we give them a body again, and the strength for their journey toward moksha.

Sacred places of Gaya

The four principal vedis of Pind Daan in Gaya

Pind Daan in Gaya is offered at 45 vedis; these four are the principal ones. All 45 vedis

Vishnupad Mandir

The principal temple of Gaya, marking the footprint Lord Vishnu pressed into the rock to still the demon Gayasura. Almost every Pind Daan in Gaya begins here, at the feet of the Lord.

Akshay Vat

The eternal, ever-living banyan tree, blessed by Mata Sita herself. Pind Daan in Gaya is held incomplete until the final Sufal is taken beneath the Akshay Vat — where Lord Rama too offered pind for King Dasharatha.

Falgu River

The sacred river of Gaya, bound to the ancestral offerings of Mata Sita. Tarpan on the Falgu opens the rite, carrying water and til to the departed.

Pret Shila

The rocky hill 8 km north of Vishnupad, for souls that left the world unnaturally — by accident, or before their time. A pind and a handful of sattu at the Dharmashila release the departed from the pret-yoni and set them on the path to liberation.

The story of Gaya

The story of Gaya — from the Vayu Purana

The Vayu Purana tells how the great asura Gayasura performed such fierce penance that his very body became holy — so holy that whoever touched it, or died upon it, attained moksha at once. Heaven filled, hell emptied, and the order of the worlds was undone.

To restore that order, the gods asked Gayasura for his body as the ground for a great yajna. He agreed, and lay down across the land now called Gaya. When his body still trembled, Lord Vishnu set his foot upon a stone slab to hold him still — the footprint the Vishnupad Temple is built upon to this day.

In return, Gayasura begged a boon: that this land become the supreme place on earth for shraddh and Pind Daan, where the offerings of the living would liberate the dead. Vishnu granted it — and so the Gaya Mahatmya promises that Pind Daan here frees generations of ancestors.

It is the Vayu Purana that carries this Gaya Mahatmya — and it is from that same Vayu that Vayu Pind Daan takes its name and its purpose.

What does a Pind Daan package in Gaya include?

Your chosen package includes the Gayawal Tirth Purohit, the prescribed ceremony, all samagri and his dakshina. Before booking, we explain the places covered and any transport included in that package. Accommodation, additional travel and optional daan are itemised separately in your quote.

How long does Pind Daan in Gaya take?

Gaya Shraddha at the three principal places is usually completed in a morning. The four-place rite also includes Pret Shila and needs additional time. The 45-vedi Shraddha takes three days; Vrihad Gaya Shraddh takes seventeen days. Share your travel dates before booking so we can confirm the time needed for your chosen rite.

Which pandit will perform our Pind Daan, and how do we book?

One of the eleven Gayawal Tirth Purohits introduced on this site performs the rite. Contact the Vayu booking team with your dates and preferred pandit, if any. We confirm who is available and tell you who will perform the rite before you travel.

We've never been to Gaya. Can you guide us start to finish?

Yes — this service is built for first-time families. We arrange the Pandaji and samagri, explain which sites to visit in what order, and add local transport or stay only if your family wants that support.

Do I have to pay anything to enquire?

No. Enquiring or calling is free and carries no obligation. You only pay once you've seen a clear, itemised quote and decided to go ahead — never before.

How do you choose the Pandaji?

Rituals at Gaya are traditionally performed by Tirth Purohit and Pandaji who know the vidhi and kram of the sacred sites. We work only with trusted pandits who perform the vidhi patiently and by the shastras. You're never handed to a random tout at the ghat.

Is Pind Daan only for Pitru Paksha?

Pitru Paksha is especially auspicious and the busiest period, but Pind Daan and Gaya Shraddha can be performed on other days through the year too. Share your preferred dates and we'll advise on timing.

Can it be done for a family member who can't travel?

In many cases a close relative can perform the Shraddha on behalf of the family. Tell us the situation in your enquiry and the Pandaji will guide you on what the tradition allows.

How much does it cost with Vayu?

Our ritual packages are priced per family. The total depends on your chosen rite and any accommodation, transport or other arrangements you request. Contact us for an itemised quote before booking. There is no payment to enquire.

What if we have to cancel?

You get a full refund of whatever you have paid for the rite, whenever you cancel — even the day before, or the morning of. No deductions, no questions. A family that cannot come should not lose money on top of that. The one exception is a hotel we booked for you, which follows the hotel’s own cancellation terms.
