Where Vishnu set his foot
According to the Vayu and Garuda Puranas, the demon Gayasur earned a boon that anyone who saw or touched him would attain moksha. To restore cosmic order, Lord Vishnu pressed his foot on Gayasur's chest at this very spot — and Gayasur's final wish was that whoever performs Shraddha on this sacred land would liberate their ancestors.
The footprint of Vishnu
The sanctum enshrines a 40 cm imprint of Lord Vishnu's foot in solid basalt rock, set within a silver-plated basin — the spiritual heart of Gaya's Pind Daan. The present temple was rebuilt in 1787 by Rani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore beside the Falgu river.
Where it fits in the route
Vishnupad is commonly planned with Falgu River tarpan and Akshay Vat. The final sequence should be confirmed by the Pandaji based on date, crowd and family tradition.
Entry and crowd notes
Official tourism guidance lists mobiles, cameras and electronic gadgets as prohibited inside, and modest dress is expected. During Pitru Paksha or peak dates, allow extra time and plan seating or pauses for elders.
