Bhagwat Saptah for departed family members
The shastras place the Bhagwat within shraddh. The text is divided into seven parts and read across seven days - a saptah - and the merit of that reading is offered to the ancestor. Families do it in the year after a death, on a barsi, or alongside the pind daan when they are already at Gaya.
Mool Path, Katha and Sangeetmay Katha
Mool path is the plain Sanskrit recitation, without discourse. This is the form the shastras prescribe for shraddh, and the one most families choose when the reading is for an ancestor. Katha adds a vyas who reads and explains, so the family and guests follow the meaning; it is the form chosen when the household will sit through it. The sangeetmay katha adds singers and musicians, and becomes an event the whole neighbourhood attends.
Seven-day reading schedule and concluding havan
The reading runs daily, usually four to five hours, at a fixed hour agreed beforehand. A vyas peeth is set up, the Bhagwat is installed and worshipped, and the parayan proceeds through the twelve skandhas in order. The seventh day closes with the completion and a havan. Families who cannot keep seven days sometimes read a chaturah, panchah or shadah parayan of four, five or six days; seven is the standard, and the one tied to shraddh.

At Gaya, in a hall or at a ghat near the rites, or at the family's own home if they prefer. Families combining it with pind daan usually keep it at Gaya and take the seven days together with the vedi circuit.

Frequently asked questions
What does Bhagwat Katha in Gaya cost?
The listed seven-day arrangements cost ₹31,000 for mool path, ₹71,000 for katha with a vyas, and ₹1,51,000 for sangeetmay katha. Discuss the venue, number of attendees and any additional arrangements; the full total is confirmed before booking.
Which form should we choose for an ancestor?
Mool path. That is the form the shastras place in shraddh, and the reading itself is the offering. A katha is chosen when the family wants to hear and understand it too.
Can it be done in fewer than seven days?
The shastras describe four, five and six day parayans as well. Seven is the standard and the one connected to shraddh, so we advise it unless the family truly cannot keep seven days.
Can it be done along with pind daan?
Yes, and many families do. The vedi circuit and the saptah are kept in the same visit, which is why families take seven days at Gaya rather than one.
Does the whole family need to sit for it?
The karta should. Others join as they can. For a mool path, the recitation is complete whether or not the household sits through every hour.
