What pitru dosh actually is
Pitra dosh — written pitru dosh in Gujarat and Maharashtra, and the same thing either way — is not a curse and not a punishment. It is a condition read in the birth chart, from where particular grahas sit in it. What the tradition says that placement signifies is pitru rin: a debt left standing towards the ancestors. It is a state the chart records, not a judgement on how a family has lived, and it is not something anyone can arrive at by listening to a list of troubles. A debt that stands can be discharged, and that is what the nivaran puja is for.
How it is read from a kundli
This is why we ask for a birth chart rather than take your word for it. Pitru dosh is not diagnosed from symptoms — it is read from the placement of particular grahas in the kundli, which is a question of fact that a competent astrologer can settle by looking. Nobody can tell you over the phone whether you have it by hearing about your troubles, and anyone who does is guessing or selling.
Being told you have it is not the same as having it
We are asked for pitru dosh puja every day by families who do not have pitru dosh at all. They have been told they do — often by someone who then offered to fix it. When we read the kundli, roughly a third of the people who come to us asking for this puja turn out not to need it, and we tell them so and send them home. If you have been given a diagnosis along with a quotation, have the chart looked at by someone with no stake in the answer.
What the tradition associates with it
Where pitru dosh is present, the tradition speaks of the effects showing in the continuity of the family line rather than in day-to-day misfortune — difficulty in progeny, obstacles that recur across generations, a sense that the family’s efforts do not settle. These are described in the shastras as indications, not as a diagnosis, and they are not proof of anything on their own. Many families carry the same difficulties with no dosh in the chart at all, which is precisely why the chart is read and the symptoms are not.
What the puja involves
One full day, in this order. The sankalp is taken in the family’s name with the gotra. The ancestors are invoked — pitra avahan — and tarpan is offered facing south, with water, til and barley. Pind is offered for them. Then the pitra havan is lit and panchbali given; this is the part that makes it a dosh nivaran puja and not a shraddh, and everything before it is preparation for it. The Pitru Sukta and the prescribed mantras are recited at the fire, and the day closes with a brahmin bhoj. The Gayawal Pandaji conducts the vidhi and gives the sufal; the family sits through it.
When we advise it, and when we do not
Where the chart shows the dosh, the puja is advised and we say so. Where it does not, we say that too, and there is nothing to book. We do not grade the rite by what a family can pay, and we do not add days to it because a chart looks difficult. The vidhi is what it is; the only question the chart settles is whether it applies to you.
Send the kundli first — the check costs nothing
Send us the birth chart and we will read it and tell you honestly what it shows: whether pitru dosh is present, and if it is, what the situation actually calls for. If it is not present we will say so, and you owe us nothing. We would rather turn a family away correctly than take money for a rite that was never needed.

Sacred places of Gaya
Where Pind Daan in Gaya is performed
Vishnupad Mandir
The principal temple of Gaya, marking the footprint Lord Vishnu pressed into the rock to still the demon Gayasura. Almost every Pind Daan in Gaya begins here, at the feet of the Lord.
Akshay Vat
The eternal, ever-living banyan tree, blessed by Mata Sita herself. Pind Daan in Gaya is held incomplete until the final Sufal is taken beneath the Akshay Vat — where Lord Rama too offered pind for King Dasharatha.
Falgu River
The sacred river of Gaya, bound to the ancestral offerings of Mata Sita. Tarpan on the Falgu opens the rite, carrying water and til to the departed.
Pret Shila
The rocky hill 8 km north of Vishnupad, for souls that left the world unnaturally — by accident, or before their time. A pind and a handful of sattu at the Dharmashila release the departed from the pret-yoni and set them on the path to liberation.
The story of Gaya
The story of Gaya — from the Vayu Purana
The Vayu Purana tells how the great asura Gayasura performed such fierce penance that his very body became holy — so holy that whoever touched it, or died upon it, attained moksha at once. Heaven filled, hell emptied, and the order of the worlds was undone.
To restore that order, the gods asked Gayasura for his body as the ground for a great yajna. He agreed, and lay down across the land now called Gaya. When his body still trembled, Lord Vishnu set his foot upon a stone slab to hold him still — the footprint the Vishnupad Temple is built upon to this day.
In return, Gayasura begged a boon: that this land become the supreme place on earth for shraddh and Pind Daan, where the offerings of the living would liberate the dead. Vishnu granted it — and so the Gaya Mahatmya promises that Pind Daan here frees generations of ancestors.
It is the Vayu Purana that carries this Gaya Mahatmya — and it is from that same Vayu that Vayu Pind Daan takes its name and its purpose.

Questions families ask
Frequently asked questions
How do I know whether I actually have pitru dosh?
It is read from your kundli, not from your symptoms. Send us the birth chart and we will look at it and tell you. There is no charge for that and no obligation afterwards.
A pandit told me I have pitru dosh. Should I believe him?
Have the chart read by someone who is not selling you the remedy. About a third of the families who come to us with that diagnosis do not have it. If a diagnosis arrived together with a price, that is reason enough for a second opinion.
Do I need an expensive multi-day puja?
Not for this. The pitru dosh nivaran puja is a single full day. If anyone quotes you several days for it before reading your chart, ask what the extra days are for.
Is this the same as Tripindi Shraddh or Narayan Bali?
No, and the names should not be used interchangeably. Tripindi is for ancestors of three generations whose rites were never done; Narayan Bali is for a death that was untimely or unnatural. Which one your family needs — if any — follows from the chart and the circumstances.
I do not know my exact birth time. Can it still be read?
Tell us what you do know. Some readings need an accurate time and some can be made without it. We will tell you plainly whether a reliable answer is possible from what you have rather than guess at one.
Can the rite be done if I cannot travel to Gaya?
Yes. The Gayawal Pandaji can perform it on the family’s behalf with the sankalp taken in your names over a call. Being present is better where it is possible, and we will say so, but the tradition provides for when it is not.
