Both are shastrokt forms of Tripindi Shraddha; the difference is the extent of the pujan, the mantra-path, the havan and the Brahmin arrangements.

Who it is performed for

Tripindi Shraddha is a kamya shraddh — a rite done for a particular purpose, not the annual observance that falls on a fixed tithi. It is offered to the ancestors of three generations taken together, and it is what the shastras provide for the departed who can no longer be named. The sankalp is taken as yathanam-gotra: where the name and the gotra are not known, the offering still reaches them. It is named where a preta badha has not settled by other means, and where the concern is the line as a whole rather than one person.

Three pindas — barley, rice and til

The three pindas are not three gods so much as the three gunas a departed soul may be held in. A pinda of barley is offered to Vishnu as the sattva form, a pinda of rice to Brahma as the rajas form, and a pinda of sesame with gur to Rudra as the tamas form. Because the ancestor is not named, the offering is made in all three so that none is left out. At Gaya the pindas are then given into the ancient well at the Dharmaranya vedi. That is where this rite ends, and it is what separates it from a pind daan offered at the other vedis.

When a Pandaji names this rite

A preta badha that will not settle. Ancestors across three generations whose rites were never performed and whose names the family no longer has. And the obstacles the tradition associates with them — a marriage that will not fix, no progeny, wealth that does not hold. If you are not sure it fits your family, tell a Gaya Pandaji the plain facts and he will say whether this is the rite or another one. There is no charge for that and no obligation after it.

Where it is done — Dharmaranya

The vedi is at Dharmaranya, south of the town towards Bodhgaya, counted among the Panchvedi tirthas. The temple of Dharmaraj Yudhishthir stands at the site; he is said to have done tapa here when he came to Gaya with Bhimsen for his father’s shraddh, and after the war at Kurukshetra Krishna is said to have brought the Pandavas here for the Tripindi of those killed. Ordinary pind daan is also offered at this vedi, on the day the circuit reaches Dharmaranya, Matangavapi and the Bodhgaya vedis — that is a separate and simpler thing. Tripindi is the larger anushthan.

What you may have read elsewhere

Tripindi is performed at other tirthas as well, and the paddhati there is not the Gaya one. If you have read of a Tripindi that runs two or three days, that is another place’s vidhi, not this one. At Gaya it is done at Dharmaranya, it takes about three hours at the vedi, and it closes with the pindas given into the well. If someone is quoting you for Tripindi, ask which of the two they mean.

We read the kundli before we book anything

Quarrels at home or illness in the family do not settle whether there is pitru dosh — the chart does. Send it and we will have it read and tell you what it shows before anything is booked. If nothing is indicated we will say so, and you owe us nothing. Where something is indicated, which rite it calls for is the Pandaji’s decision — Tripindi where the concern is the ancestors as a whole and the names are gone, and a different vidhi where the chart points elsewhere.

Questions families ask

Frequently asked questions

Who exactly is Tripindi Shraddha performed for?

For the ancestors of three generations taken together, including those whose name and gotra the family no longer has — the sankalp is taken as yathanam-gotra for exactly that reason. It is also the rite named where a preta badha has not settled.

Is Tripindi Shraddha the same as regular Pind Daan?

No. Pind daan at the Gaya vedis is offered in the circuit for ancestors you can name. Tripindi is a separate kamya rite at the Dharmaranya vedi — three pindas of barley, rice and til, ending with the pindas given into the well there. Ordinary pind daan is also offered at Dharmaranya, and that is not Tripindi.

How long does it take at Gaya?

About three hours at the vedi. With travel to Dharmaranya and back it is a day in Gaya. If you have been quoted two or three days for Tripindi, that is the paddhati of a different tirtha.

We do not know our ancestors’ names. Can it still be done?

Yes — that is the situation this rite exists for. Bring whatever you have and the sankalp will be taken without the names. A Gaya Pandaji will confirm the vidhi once he hears your family’s facts.
