Peace for unsettled souls
Narayan Bali is a Vedic rite invoking Lord Narayan (Vishnu) for departed souls believed to be unsettled — for example after an untimely or unnatural death, or where the family senses unfulfilled desires of an ancestor. The Garuda Purana describes such souls as needing a special rite to move beyond the preta state toward peace.
Invoking Lord Narayan
The rite seeks the grace of Vishnu as Narayan, the refuge of souls, to grant gati — onward passage — to an ancestor who has not found peace.
When families consider it
It is traditionally considered for untimely or unnatural death, or persistent family concern — always after a Pandaji confirms it is the suitable vidhi. Narayan Bali and Pind Daan are related, but they are not the same rite.

Is Narayan Bali the same as Pind Daan?
No. Narayan Bali and Pind Daan are both pitru rituals, but they are not the same vidhi. The family context is recorded first and the Pandaji confirms what should be performed.
